HOW TO DISINFECT/CHLORINATE PRIVATE WELLS

1.  Remove cap/seal at well casing

2.  Pour in 1 gallon of unscented household bleach or chlorinated medium(1 gallon is sufficient for a 300 ft well)

3.  Turn on all fixtures in home one at a time.  Start at the furthest fixture away from well and include all outside hose bibs, water closets, dishwasher, clothes washer, etc..

4.  Turn off fixtures when smell of bleach occurs

5.  Let stand for 12 hours but no more than 24 hours.

6.  Flush water through outside hose bib until odor is no longer detectable.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT FILL SEPTIC TANK WITH FLUSHED WATER!!!

7.  Sample water quality for bacteria after a week or so.

8.  Homes sharing a community well must coordinate chlorination efforts.

If your well has been flooded, it is necessary to pump the water out of it until the water runs clear as possible, before starting the disinfection process.
